“Create a separate bathing ghat with proper barricades”

MADURAI: Superintendent of Police V. Balakrishnan inspected the ‘saravana poigai’ at the Subramanian Swamy Temple, Thiruparankundram.

According to a press release issued here on Sunday, the police suggested to the HR & CE authorities to ensure that a separate bathing ghat was earmarked with proper barricades at the “saravana poigai”.

The temple which attracted a large number of devotees throughout the year should be made safer for the pilgrims. For instance, the caution boards should be erected by indicating the depth of the pond by the authorities.

Pollution control board staff should take up the project of controlling the pollution as the water was stagnant. A trained swimmer should be positioned at the pond by the HR & CE, Mr. Balakrishnan felt and added that life saving equipment like inflated tubes and swimmer jackets may be kept ready for use by non-swimmers.

It may be recalled that in 2008, four women died and in 2009, two persons drowned in the pond. Investigations revealed that the pilgrims were unaware of the depth or they did not know swimming, the press note added.
