Southern Railway on Thursday announced it would soon recruit 4,000 persons in Group ‘D' to fill up the vacancies in the ‘safety category.'

Unfurling the national flag on the occasion of the country's 63rd Republic Day at the Southern Railway New General Office, its General Manager Deepak Krishan said that Carriage Workshop, Perambur, was expecting an export order of 414 metre gauge coaches to Bangladesh and second steam locomotives from the Golden Rock Workshops would roll out by February. During the current year up to December 2011, passenger earnings were Rs.2,130 crore and the originating passengers increased by 42.75 million compared to last year.

Abhay K. Khanna, General Manager, Integral Coach Factory said that the production capacity of coaches will be enhanced from 1,500 to 1,700 costing Rs.250 crore.

Chief Justice M.Y. Eqbal hoisted the national flag in the Madras High Court premises and Justice M. Thanikachalam, president, State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission at the Commission's premises.

V. Rangachari, Executive Director and Basin Manager (KG-PG), Oil and Natural Gas Corporation hoisted the national flag at the Thalamuthu Natarajan Towers, Egmore.

S. Venkataramana, Managing Director (i/c), Chennai Petroleum Corporation called for lifting the ban on new projects in Manali Industrial area to enable planned projects to be completed.

The Republic Day was celebrated at Indian Oil Corporation, Southern Regional Office, Chennai, Chennai Port Trust administrative building, Income Tax Aayakar Bhavan, Tamil Nadu State Election Commission, State Express Transport Corporation Head Quarters in Chennai. The function was marked by distribution of long service awards to employees, and presentation of awards and certificates to CISF and distribution of vehicles to differently-abled persons. A similar function was held at Directorate of Elementary Education and on the premises of various political outfits.

In his Republic Day speech, Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director, Indian Institute of Technology-Madrassaid Distinguished Alumnus Award (DAA) 2012 would be presented to eight persons during the Institute Day celebration in April 2012.
