A ‘local standby' was declared at the Chennai airport on Tuesday noon after a Tiruchi-bound Air India Express flight from Singapore developed a technical snag and was diverted here.

Airport sources said that the pilot of the Boeing 737-800 with 160 passengers on board informed Airports Authority officials at the Tiruchi airport about the snag. Following this, the airport officials diverted the aircraft to the Chennai airport, as they did not have the facilities for attending to the problem.

A senior Airports Authority of India official said that the aircraft landed safely around noon.
