A new eatery opens in town, and this time it is from the A1 Chips people

It is one of the brands that people identify with Coimbatore. It is almost mandatory for people visiting their friends or relatives either in the country or abroad to carry packets of the delicious nendran chips from here. Local residents make their weekly purchases of chips and other goodies from this outlet. A-1 Chips is a household name, and it has steadily expanded with a total of 11 branches in Coimbatore, and it even exports to four countries. But as successful businesses go, the urge to become more diverse is always on the mind. S. Murali, it’s co-founder and managing partner says, “Chips, sweets and savouries are not necessarily consumed on a daily basis. We wanted to start an outlet that would cater to the daily needs of people. One has to eat three meals a day to survive. There are many restaurants in the city, but not too many which offer quality and hygienic fare, two things we are famous for.”

Murali and his brothers brainstormed for three months and decided on a theme that would grab the attention of the masses. And they came up with Snack Street, a restaurant that combined the taste of street food with the hygiene of a restaurant. They drew out a menu that included chat, idlys, dosas and paniyarams and jazzed up the interiors of the restaurant with big, loud posters of super stars of Tamil cinema. So as you settle down at your wooden table, matinee idols Vijay, Ajith, Suriya, Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan and yesteryear superstars MGR and Sivaji Ganesan painted by a local artist stare down at you from the walls. “Street food has always been a great draw for people. We have often stopped for a bite after school, college or work at roadside stalls. I wanted to recreate that ambience, offering better levels of hygiene while maintaining the same taste,” says S. Rajan, MD of A1 Chips and Exports India Pvt Ltd and co-founder of Snack Street.

If you let your imagination run free, you could easily believe you are eating at a roadside stall, with LED street lanterns and overhead tubes in a row to illuminate the area. The food is reminiscent of stuff you have grabbed on your way back from school or college. Only here, an enthusiastic waiter in a red and black uniform takes your order. And soon, steaming hot paniyarams, appams and adai aviyal are served. Snack Street is located at East Venkatasamy Road, R.S. Puram.
