Sleuths of the Prohibition Enforcement Wing (PEW) of the city police, on Saturday seized over Rs. 3 lakh worth of spurious liquor bottles which were smuggled into Chennai in order to be illegally sold along with TASMAC products.

Six persons were arrested. Police sources said, a PEW team intercepted a luxury van at Vanagaram in the small hours of Saturday and an inspection of the vehicle revealed a total of 3,840 duplicate bottles of brandy and 5,000 fake government labels.

Three men in the vehicle, Suresh (34) of Karur, Sundar (29) of Trichy and Christopher (36) of Alwarthirunagar in Chennai, were arrested.

Information provided by the trio led the police to an SUV parked at the Velappanchavadi – P.H. Road junction and 960 fake rum bottles hidden in the vehicle were seized. The trio's accomplices Charles (29) of Nazarathpet, Murali (48) and Eknath Babu (26), both residents of Kodungaiyur, were also arrested from near the vehicle.

Christopher and Charles, who were working as sales representatives for a TASMAC godown in Ambattur Estate, had sold the fake alcohol bottles along with original products to various TASMAC outlets and bars in and around the city, sources added. Suresh and Sunder had also smuggled fake bottles from Puducherry and sold it to Murali. The duo also had links with notorious spurious liquor dealers Eshwaramoorthy and Rukmani.
