SKM Sevai Maiyam, a brainchild of SKM. Maeilanandhan, had been taking care of all the basic needs of more than 200 families in Gandhi Nagar and Rajiv Nagar in Saminathapuram, at Erode.

The trust provides with all that they can demand for to lead a decent, healthy life. Until a decade ago, children and youth in the hamlets did not take education seriously, as did their parents, who felt the child would be better of grazing cow and bringing home Rs. 50 a week.

Today, however, all the children from the hamlet attend schools and colleges - a change brought about by the SKM Sevai Maiyam. Recalling the birth of the Maiyam, Mr. Maeilanandhan says he got the inspiration from Swami Vivekananda’s book ‘Pudhiya India-vai Padaip-pom’ (Let’s build a new India). The Maiyam gives the school and college students breakfast, lunch, evening snack and supper. It also takes care of their daily needs right from soap to dress to footwear to notebooks to fees. It also provides special coaching, value education and computer training to the students. The Maiyam has also appointed a doctor and avails the services of two other visiting physicians, who take care of the basic health needs of the children. If the children are one eye of the Maiyam, the other is the elderly. All the aged persons get breakfast, lunch and dinner at the place and also medical care. “We wanted the old too as beneficiaries, as they are usually neglected,” Mr. Maeilanandhan explains.
