Six persons were injured when two groups of Scheduled Castes clashed over the erection of an idol at Kaikattipudur, near Avinashi, during the early hours of Wednesday.
They threw stones at each other which resulted in the injuries. The injured were taken to District Headquarters hospital.
Four of the six persons were discharged from the hospital in the evening.
Sources said that the problem began when some people belonging to one of the sub-sections of the Scheduled Castes opposed to the setting up of the idol by the other group at a particular location.
They said the place belonged to a government school.
The idol was actually located in another spot. It was shifted to the new location to facilitate road expansion in the area.
The sour relationship between the two groups of people on the issue had been turning worse for the last several days. As the situation became tense, Superintendent of Police Amit Kumar Singh and other senior officials visited the place and held talks with both the groups.
Mr. Singh later told The Hindu that the idol would be moved to a new location in another few days.
