Coimbatore: In a month-long drive against smuggling of Public Distribution System (PDS) commodities, the Civil Supplies CID personnel in the West Zone arrested six persons.

In an effort to check the increasing cases of smuggling of PDS commodities across the border, the Civil Supplies CID personnel had launched a zone-wise drive.

Special teams, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police, West Zone, V.Subbarayalu, conducted vehicle checks on all arterial roads besides suspected pockets known for hoarding of smuggled goods.

During the checks at Coimbatore, Erode, Salem and Dharmapuri districts, the police seized 800 litres of Kerosene and 67 tonnes of PDS rice besides another 35 bags of rice, 9 LPG cylinders and petrol which were about to be smuggled to Karnataka and Kerala. .
