Case pertained to murder of Alagammai Achi (70), wife of Singaram Chettiar (74)

: The Sivaganga Police on Saturday solved the murder for gain case reported in the Madhagupatty police station limits a few days ago.

According to police sources, the special teams formed to investigate the case followed specific clues and interrogated Jeyalakshmi (25) of Aranthangi on suspicion, who had staged a drama that she was among the victims.

The case pertained to the murder of Alagammai Achi (70), wife of Singaram Chettiar (74) of Chokkanathapuram.

A group of four persons, who gained entry into his house blindfolded and tied them along with the housemaid Jeyalakshmi.

They also stuffed cloths in their mouth. Alagammai died of suffocation. The gang escaped from the scene after lifting 46 sovereigns of gold ornaments.

Acting on the instructions of the Deputy Inspector General of Police M. Ramasubramani and the Superintendent of Police Panneerselvam, the special teams went to Aranthangi and the surrounding areas and picked up a few persons.

It was revealed that a group of seven persons involved in the crime with the assistance of the housemaid Jeyalakshmi.

Confessing, she told the police that since her employer (Singaram Chettiar) had refused to extend loan for the marriage of her sister Kalaiarasi (27) she assisted the gang led by one Selvam (25), who was surrendered before a court.

Mr. Ramasubramani told reporters here on Saturday that beside Jeyalakshmi, and B. Kalaiarasi (33), a tenant of Singaram Chettiar, another Kalaiarasi, Rajangam (25) of Nanakudi and Pirabu (28) of Mavadikottai near Aranthangi were arrested. One more accused was yet to be arrested.

The DIG said all 46 sovereigns of gold ornaments lifted by the gang were retrieved.
