TIRUCHI: Sites for establishing five automatic weather stations, which would disseminate meteorological information to farmers, in Tiruchi district have been identified.

These stations were among 224 planned to be established in the State through the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University.

According to the Joint Director of Agriculture, N. Ponnuswamy, they would be set up at Manikandam, Thathaiyengarpet, Thuraiyur, Pullampadi and Musiri in the district. The stations would provide regular meteorological information and bulletins to farmers so as to help them plan their farming operations in a better way.

“The sites for the stations were identified by officials recently after inspections to ensure that there were no obstructions around. The weather stations would start functioning once the requisite equipment were installed,” Mr. Ponnusamy told The Hindu.

Mr. Ponnusamy also said that the Agriculture Department was planning to establish a sophisticated vegetable retail store in Tiruchi.
