The Kanchipuram Arignar Anna Silk Co-Operative Society Limited opened a fully air-conditioned showroom here on Monday.
District Collector Pooja Kulkarni inaugurated the showroom and also the first sale in the presence of S. Prakasam, Joint Director of the Society, and other officials.
Mr. Prakasam told The Hindu that the largest silk weavers’ society in the Kanchipuram has two showrooms in Kanchipuram and also in Chennai, Coimbatore, Salem, Trichy, Dharmapuri, Tirunelveli, Karaikkudi, Madurai and Virudhunagar. All the showrooms are air-conditioned. The unique feature of the society is that the customers can customise the design of the saris at its head office or from its branches. The customised silk saris would be supplied to the customers within a specified time. The silk saris are available in the range of Rs. 5000 to Rs. 1.2 lakh. New designs are developed and woven with a technique of adai and Jacquard with computer-aided designs. The society get designs from its design department and through outsourcing from National Institute of Fashion Technology, Government of India's Weavers Service Centre, National Institute of Design, Ahamadabad, Apex Cooperative Society (Co-optex, Chennai) and also from freelance designers.
