As many as 450 shops in Kayalpatnam remained closed on Thursday following a strike call given by members of Kayalpatnam Environmental Protection Association (KEPA) condemning a chemical factory, which they claimed was polluting the atmosphere. Kayalpatnam, a second grade municipality with a population of around 45, 000 people, was exposed to pollution , Abdul Kadar, a representative of KEPA, said.
The KEPA members staged a demonstration in the main bazaar demanding action against the factory to control pollution. Autorickshaws also remained off the road in support of the strike.
However, bus services was not affected and educational institutions functioned as usual.
Shops selling essential supplies including medicines also remained opened.
