Two persons who attempted to murder a housewife before stealing cash and jewels were sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) and were also ordered to pay a fine of Rs.1500 each.

Lenin of Rajapalayam and Chandrasekar of Andipatti gained entry into the house of Arunachalam of Periyasuraikaipatti in Rajapalayam on February 5, 2010.

Arunachalam, a teacher in a higher secondary school at Vasudevanallur, was away and his wife Suseela alias Avudaiammal was alone when the accused entered the house on the pretext of servicing the water purifier. They tried to snatch her jewels and when she resisted, they stabbed her on her neck. As she swooned, they took away her five sovereigns of jewels and Rs.3,000 that was kept in a cupboard. On Saturday, Chief Judicial Magistrate K. Devadoss sentenced them to found them guilty and imposed seven years of rigorous imprisonment and asked them to pay a fine of Rs.3,000.
