Two youths, who allegedly attacked a 70-year-old man and injured him, were sentenced to seven-year imprisonment by a fast track court here on Wednesday.
According to police, Balamurugan (25), a painter of Chetpet, borrowed some money from Jayaraj (70) of the same area a few months ago. When he asked him to repay, Balamurugan dodged him. However, Jayaraj kept insisting on the payment.
Irked over this, Balamurugan and his associate Sripal (25), a car driver of Chetpet, attacked Jayaraj when he was going to a shop on a bicycle on April 5 last year. The victim suffered injuries and was admitted to a private hospital.
“The incident took place in broad daylight on Yadavar Street. Jayaraj is an acute diabetic and was hospitalised for many days. The accused persons were arrested and remanded to judicial custody. Investigation revealed their involvement in many cases,” Inspector (Aminjikarai) S. Anantharaman, who investigated the case, said.
The second fast track court judge, Ravindra Das, who heard the case, sentenced both the accused to seven years' rigorous imprisonment.
A fine of Rs.200 was imposed on them, sources said.
