For the convenience of the public utilising the courier/ parcel service being offered by State Express Transport Corporation (SETC), the private company operating the service from the Tiruchi Central Bus Stand intends to start another booking and delivery counter at Srirangam.

Vspeeds Logistics that operates the service with the product name 7.C with 12 booking and delivery counters is in the process of expanding its network. The service is being patronised well, according to G.Ramesh, project manager. Prompt delivery of the consignments owing to the timely schedule of SETC buses has made the service dependable, he said, adding that the hitherto unutilised space in the buses was generating additional revenue. Franchisee model of expansion was under contemplation, he said.

All a customer has to do is produce a proof of identity and address to book the courier or parcel to the destination of his choice. The consignee also has to produce the proof of identity and address to take delivery at the destination point. At present, the service covers Chennai, Bangalore, Salem, Madurai, Coimbatore, Velur, Karur, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Erode, Tirupur and Tiruchi.

As consignments from other destinations to Koyambedu in Chennai are increasing by the day, the company has proposed to have its booking and delivery counters at 25 depots of the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (Chennai). The operation has already begun at Broadways bus stand, Mr. Ramesh informed.

Unlike in the case of courier companies that take a day to deliver the consignment, the SETC buses deliver the packages on the same day. The cost-effective tariff is working out to the mutual advantage of SETC and Vspeeds Logistics.

For a document weighing up to 250 grams, the minimum charge is Rs. 7, and Rs. 2.50 is levied for every additional 250 grams. As for parcels, the basic slab for 2.5 kg and below is Rs. 25. For every additional kilogram, Rs 10 is charged. The company offers 25 per cent concession for ex-servicemen and differently abled persons. Students can send study materials up to 7 kg for Rs. 16.

Similar services are also being offered by private omni bus operators, but at more than double the cost. Also, the consignee has to waste time waiting at the destination point. In the case of SETC, the consignee could take possession of the consignment at a convenient time. The consignor could also book the courier or parcel at any time of the day.

Interestingly, private courier companies have also begun to utilise the SETC courier service, Mr. Ramesh said, expressing readiness to create more awareness about the service among the public over phone: 9551077777.
