In the results of the State Eligibility Test (SET) that were published here on Saturday, 10.64 per cent have passed, as compared to 3.39 per cent last year. The eligibility test for lecturership, conducted by Bharathiar University in October 2012, saw candidates write under 27 subjects.

While 59,190 had applied for the test, only 51,669 appeared. Of these, 5,495 have passed the test, according to a release from the university, which is the nodal centre in the State for the conduct of the test.

As many as 2,901 candidates from the general category, 1,523 from OBC, and 988 from BC and SC / ST have cleared. Eighty three candidates with disability have also passed.

The maximum number of 826 passes has been from the Tamil language, with the next highest with 630 passes from commerce stream, and the third highest with 589 passes from the computer science stream. The maximum number who wrote the test – 7,359 – was also from the computer science stream. The least number – 63 – was for the philosophy subject.

Expressing happiness over the improvement in pass percentage, Vice-Chancellor of Bharathiar University G. James Pitchai said that this reflected the improvement in quality of education.
