Responsibility of serving safe food rests with hotels: DPH

MADURAI: With the increasing trend among the masses eating out at hotels and restaurants, the responsibility of serving them safe and hygienic food laid with the hotels and their workers, Director of Public Health S. Elango, said.

Inaugurating a training programme for hotels staff and workers on handling food items here on Friday, Dr. Elango said that it was the first programme to be conducted in the State.

The number of people, especially where both members of the family are working, depending on hotels and eateries has increased. The people involved in cooking, serving and managing the food items, have an important social responsibility in ensuring good health of their customers.

Instead of serving higher quantity of food, the hoteliers should also look at serving nutritious and hygienic food. “People are ready to pay for getting food rich in protein, vitamins and minerals,” he said. They should concentrate on food safety, right methods of preservation, using unadulterated ingredients and handle them in a hygienic way.

The Corporation Commissioner, S. Sebastine, advised the hoteliers to properly train their workers so that they cooperate to keep the hotel premises clean and serve food in a neat environment. He asked the hotel owners not to employ workers with diseases as they could spread the diseases to the customers.

The city Health Officer, V. Subramanyam, Deputy Director (Health) A. Palanichamy and Principal of Family Welfare Training Centre, V. Shanmugasundaram, were among those who spoke.
