KARAIKAL: The Karaikal Struggle Group (KSG) on Saturday reiterated its demand for separate Union Territory status for Karaikal region in the Union Territory of Puducherry.

The high-level committee meeting of the KSG held here on Saturday under the chairmanship of R. Ramaseenivasan, freedom fighter, adopted a resolution requesting the Centre to create a separate Legislative Assembly and confer separate UT status to carry out the assurance given in the Indo-French treaty of May 26, 1956.

The KSG wanted the district MLAs to announce in public over the issue of according separate UT status for and in getting regional representation in Government employment and more funds for the region on the basis of population.

Mr. Ramaseenivasan said that the Indo-French Treaty under which French Indian enclaves were merged with India assured to continue the benefit to have a separate administrative set up enjoyed by the people. That benefit of separate administrative set up was taken away in 1964 when a Legislative Assembly was constituted for Puducherry Union Territory. He pointed out that Karaikal region was being discriminated now.

The convenor of KSG and the President of Pondicherry Cauvery Delta Farmers Legal Action Committee, S.P. Selvashanmugham, recalled that all the six legislators collectively issued a statement in December last year that the Puducherry Government had been neglecting Karaikal region.
