He assaulted a one-and-half year-old child at Poongunam

The Mahila Court here on Wednesday gave life imprisonment to M. Suresh (27) on charges of sexually abusing a one-and-half-year-old girl child.

Judge Subhadevi sentenced him on three counts - ill-treating the child, unauthorised entry into the house and threatening another girl of dire consequences.

For the first offence, he was sentenced to undergo jail term for life; for the second offence, he was given a three-year jail term and slapped a fine of Rs. 1,000; and for the third, seven-year jail term and a fine of Rs. 2,000.

All the terms would run concurrently.

The Judge also directed the accused to pay a compensation of Rs. 1 lakh to the child’s family. Subsequently, Suresh was lodged in the Cuddalore Central Prison.

Periyasamy, a resident of Maligampattu village near Panruti, along with his family members, including the child, reportedly went to a relative’s place at Poongunam for a function.

The child was left in the custody of an eight-year-old girl, a relative.

As the child fell asleep, the girl left her in the relative’s house. Suresh, who was staying across the street, surreptitiously entered the house, and took the child to his place. The child started crying when he sexually abused her. When the girl went to attend on the child, Suresh threatened her of dire consequences if she spoke to anyone about the incident.The child’s parents and relatives took her to hospital for treatment.

The Kadampuliyur police booked a case and arrested Suresh.
