Senior citizens were honoured at the World Elders Day celebrations organised here on Tuesday. Appreciation certificates were given away to 40 senior citizens and each of them was presented a shawl.

Felicitating the elders at the State-level function, Minister for Social Welfare and Nutritious Noon Meal B. Valarmathi said Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had been implementing various schemes for the welfare of senior citizens, adding that the government had increased the old age pension from Rs. 500 to Rs. 1,000 per month benefitting over 2.5 lakh elders. She said Rs. 56 lakh had been provided as subsidy to 28 old age homes run through non-governmental organisations in the State.

School students who emerged winners in elocution competitions conducted in connection with World Elders Day were given away prizes. The Minister also distributed assistive device to seven differently abled persons.
