CHENNAI: The Koyambedu police on Monday arrested three persons in connection with the seizure of 1,000 detonators found abandoned in a bus at Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT) here last week. They were identified as Gnanasekaran (50) of Chendrayappalli, Gudiyatham, his employee Nandagopal (44), and Kanniah (45) of Kosavan Pudur, Gudiyatham.

The police said Gnanasekaran was a licensed agent for explosives. He purchased the detonators and sold them to Kanniah, who brought them in a bus to the city. On seeing a large number of police personnel at the bus terminus, he abandoned the 10 boxes containing 1,000 detonators, they said.

Investigations revealed that Kanniah, who also has a licence to hold explosive substances, often sold detonators to people who did not have licences to deal in explosives, police said.

A case under Section 5 (Possessing explosive materials without licence) of the Indian Explosives Substances Act has been filed against the arrested persons. They were remanded to judicial custody.

On January 13, 10 boxes of detonators were found abandoned in a bus that arrived at the CMBT at Koyambedu from Vellore.
