Export of marine products reached an all-time high in terms of quantity, rupee and dollar values. A total of 9,28,215 tonnes of seafood valued at Rs.18,856 crore was exported during 2012-13 to various countries, A.Ansar Ali, Deputy Director, Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), Tuticorin, told The Hindu on Saturday.
Increase in production of shrimp varieties including vannamei, black tiger and other items helped achieve these figures, Dr.Ali said.
Seafood exports recorded a growth of Rs.7.68 percent over the last year in quantity, 13.61 percent in rupee earnings and 0.1 percent growth in US dollar earnings.
The quantity of seafood exported in 2011-12 was 8,62,021 tonnes, fetching a foreign exchange revenue of Rs.16,597 crore. Frozen seafood items, including shrimp, fish, cuttle fish, squid, chilled items and dried items were also high on the list of exports.
Seafood export witnessed a robust growth despite poor economic conditions in the European Union, a recovering economy in the USA, technical barriers to trade laid by Japan, continuing anti-dumping duty, the possibility of countervailing duty on frozen shrimp by the US and the continuous devaluation of Indian currency, he said.
On seafood varieties, Dr.Ali said frozen shrimp continued to be the major export value item, accounting for 51.35 percent of the total US dollar earnings with shipments of 2,28,620 tonnes during the last fiscal. But in terms of quantity, frozen fish topped the seafood items with an export record of 3,43,876 tonnes.
South East Asia remained the largest buyer of Indian marine products with a share of 23.12 percent in terms of US dollar value realisation. With a significant contribution to export growth, South East Asian countries imported a whopping 3,40,944 tonnes. He said the European Union was the second largest market with 1,58,357 tonnes followed by the USA, Japan, China, the Middle East and other countries.
