For sexual harassment of a girl student

A Judicial Magistrate Court in Tiruvallur on Tuesday sentenced a schoolteacher to two years’ rigorous imprisonment for sexual harassment of a girl student of a private school run by a non-governmental organisation in 2006-07.

B.C. Gopinath, Judicial Magistrate-I, Tiruvallur, found Palanisamy guilty and convicted him for the offences under Section 354 (Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of IPC and Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act.

The 14 year-old victim joined IX standard in the school in Tiruvallur district during the academic year 2006-07. She was subjected to sexual abuse by her physics teacher and was molested while she was alone in the science lab.

The accused had threatened her not to disclose his activities. As his harassment continued further, the girl reported it to her class teacher. When the school management failed to take any steps against the teacher, the girls’ parents lodged a complaint with Vengal police. Later, the case was transferred to CBI CID for further investigation.
