A 10-year-old schoolgirl was killed and four other students sustained injuries when the autorickshaw in which they were returning from school turned on its side near Sathuperi on Thursday evening.

 According to police, Oviya, daughter of Johnson of Sathuperi, and four other children were studying in a primary and nursery school at Sembedu. They were returning home from when the autorickshaw hit a cyclist and turned on its side.

The children sustained injuries and were rushed to the Government Vellore Medical College Hospital at Adukkamparai. However, Oviya succumbed to injuries. The injured - Darshan (4), Jagadeshkumar (5), Poovizhian (4) and Raviraj (4) - were admitted to the hospital.

The auto driver also sustained injuries and was undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Police have blamed the driver for rash driving.
