A rally was taken out by schoolchildren to create awareness about blood donation as part of world blood donors’ day here on Wednesday.

K. Baskaran, Collector, flagged off the rally from railway station. In the rally organised by AIDS Control Society, 500 students from Rajah’s Higher Secondary School, Kalyanasundaram HSS and Veera Raghava HSS participated. The rally went via Keelavasal, Keela Alankam, and reached Rajah’s HSS.

Blood collection

Mr. Baskaran said that 13,049 units of blood had been collected by various hospitals in the district from April 2012 to May 2013.

Of them, 3,411 units were collected by Rajah Mirasudhar Government Hospital in Thanjavur, 6,676 units by Thanjavur Medical College Hospital, 798 units by Pattukottai Government Hospital, and 2,164 units by Kumbakonam Government Hospital.

The Collector appealed to the youth to donate blood. Blood Donors Day is observed to encourage blood donors and motivate people to donate blood.

A. Mohan, Deputy Director of Health; and Kannaiyan, District Education Officer, took part in the rally.
