Driver of a school van, Khaja Mohideen (46) of Ranipet, who transports children from Walajapet and nearby villages to the National Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Arcot, was killed on the spot and all the 22 children travelling in the van were injured, when a sand-laden lorry proceeding from SIPCOT to Chennai collided head-on with the van at Muthukkadai junction in Ranipet on Thursday morning.

According to the police, the van capsized following the collision and the driver was crushed to death. Of the 22 injured children, 19 were admitted to the Government District Headquarters Hospital, Walajpet, while the remaining three were referred to the Government Vellore Medical College Hospital for further treatment.

Thavamani (35) and Nandakumar (35) of Puliyangannu, driver and owner respectively of the lorry were arrested.
