CHENNAI: It acts as a mechanical eye for the visually- and hearing-impaired persons. The school project from B. Aravindhan and M. Jeeva, class X students of Sir M.Ct.Muthiah Chettiar Boys Higher Secondary School, Purasawakkam, is on its way to being featured at the National Science Fair to be held soon.

The device consists of a sensor stick, equipped with photo sensors, sound sensors and vibrators.

The stick also has a wheel and two 9-volt batteries to help vision and hearing impaired persons walk on busy roads, even at night.

An object detector is fitted to the stick. It emits infrared rays while the IC circuit activates the vibrator to alert the user.

According to the students, sensor stick will help the vision as well as hearing impaired persons to move about freely.

The project won first prize at the 33rd state-level Jawaharlal Nehru Science Exhibition held recently in Madurai.
