Guides win award
Three guides of Natarajan Dhamayanthi Higher Secondary School at Velipalayam near Nagapattinam – R. Vijayalakshmi, R. Sowmiya and T.Sangeetha – have been selected for the ‘Governor award' for Scouts and Guides for the current year. At a function held at the school recently, A.D. Jayampandian, founder of the school honoured the students. N. Kathiresan Prabhu, secretary of education committee of the school; Santhana Thanjaivanan, chief educational officer were among those who offered felicitations and underlined the importance of scouts and guides movement. M. Bharathi, the Guide, was present.
Founder's day celebrated
The founder's day was celebrated at Shri Venkateswara matriculation HSS near Thanjavur recently. S. Suresh Kumar, District Revenue Officer, presided over the function and spoke on the services of the late S.Ponnuswamy Iyer, the founder of the school. He also distributed prizes to students. S.Narendran, resource-person, spoke on the importance of health and hygiene. He appealed to students to increase their intake off greens and vegetables. G.Jayashankar, principal, paid homage to S.Ponnuswamy Iyer and spoke on his long term plan for the benefit of the students belonging to the economically weaker section in and around Thanjavur. S.P. Balasubramanian, correspondent, offered felicitations.
Fancy dress competition
A large number of students participated in the fancy dress competition held at Sree Kalaimagal Nursery and Primary School, Nagapattinam recently. Hemamalini, president and Premalatha, secretary of the Inner Wheel Club, were the judges. Prizes were distributed to the winners.
Bharathiyar Jayanthi was celebrated in a novel manner at the Dr.G.S.Kalyanasundaram Memorial School, Chozan Maligai, Kumbakonam recently. The students and the teachers went to four different temples – Kumbeshwarar Temple, Nageswarar Temple, Swaminatha Swami Temple, Swamimalai and Durgai Amman Temple, Patteeswaram and rendered Bharathiar songs. Parents, well wishers and devotees participated. G. Vasanthi, Ramesh Babu, S. Thirugnanasambantham and K. M. Bindusadhakan, parents, inaugurated the singing programme.
NSS volunteers felicitated
NSS volunteers of Vivekananda Higher Secondary School in Karur were visibly encouraged, when each of them got a certificate from the school in appreciation of their participation in the ceremonial parade on the occasion of the R-Day celebrations, organised by the district administration. M. Selvaraj, chairman of the school, K. Balasubramanian, headmaster and Swami Bodhananda Maharaj, school secretary, said that the certificate would encourage the NSS volunteers to a great extent.
Training on fire control
A day-long training programme on ‘fire control and rescue operation' was organised to benefit the Junior Red Cross volunteers of various schools in Kumbakonam panchayat union, at Kumbakonam recently. M. Ilanchezhian, Station Fire Officer, who was the resource-person, explained a few simple techniques to tackle any crisis. Prakasam, secretary of Red Cross Society, S. Rajamahendran, director of Sakthi paramedical college, spoke on health and hygiene. Paul, Little Flower HSS, JRC counsellor spoke. Sowmyanarayanan, member of Red Cross Society, spoke on the importance of the Red Cross movement.
Young talent comes
A large number of students participated in the the ‘Young talent scheme test' held recently by the Education Department recently. Students displayed their skill in essay-writing, poetry, quiz, painting, music, Bharathanatyam, folk dance and musical instruments and vocal events on the occasion. M. Selvasekaran, assistant headmaster, Crescent HSS, Avanipuram, inaugurated the test and appealed to the students to utilise every opportunity to exhibit and improve upon their skill.
Annual day celebration
A fancy dress competition was held as part of the annual day celebrations at Guthoos matriculation HSS at Machuvadi near Pudukottai recently. Govindaraj and Shanmugam, resource-persons, spoke on the importance of developing skills. Mohamed Ali, correspondent and Rujaludeen, secretary spoke.
Creating awareness to prevent cancer
Under the auspices of the NCC unit of Arulmigu Brahadambal Boys' HSS in Pudukottai, an awareness procession on ‘prevention of cancer' was taken out recently.
V.Veerappan, headmaster, inaugurated the rally. Students raised slogans against the consumption of tobacco and related products. A large number of students and teachers marched down the thoroughfares and reached the school. M.K. Marimuthu, NCC Officer, spoke.
Rope skipping contest
Under the auspices of the Pudukottai rope skipping association, a district-level rope skipping championship was organised in Pudukotttai recently.
Jagapriya of Sudharshan Vidhya Vikas, won the third position in the speed event. Balamukesh won the third prize in the free style under novice (11-14 years) and was selected to represent the district competition to be held in Chennai. M. Rajkumar, principal, honoured the students who won in various competitions.
