Seminar on animal rights

The Karuna Club of Sri Venkateswara Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Thanjavur, organised a day-long training programme on ‘humane education' for the benefit of the students of different schools. M. C. Appandai Raj, Educational Officer, Karuna International, in his inaugural address spoke on the need for putting an end to cruelty to animals. D. Basheer Ahmed, Assistant Professor, Veterinary University Training Research Centre, Thanjavur, explained the role of students in protecting the animals and their rights. G. Jayashankar, principal, spoke on the humane values, Karuna values and vegetarian way of life. V. Elangovan, District Environmental Coordinator, G. K. Kannan, Forest Ranger, S. Gowri, senior principal, and others also spoke.

NSS volunteers clean temple

The NSS volunteers of Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Kodavasal, Tiruvarur district, cleaned the Sri Koneshwarar Temple premises. B.K. Govindarajan, NSS programme officer; C. Gurumoorthi, assistant NSS programme officer, and S. Swaminathan, a retired headmaster, were present. The devotees were impressed by the gesture of the students.

Roller skating competition

S. Guru Ragaventhira, a standard IV student of Mount Zion International School, Pudukottai, won a couple of prizes in the roller skating championship, conducted by the Pudukottai District Roller Skating Association. He won the second prize in the rink-I event and third prize in the rink-II event. J. Jonathan, director of the school; J. Angeline, academic coordinator; and R.M. Sivaraman, coach, felicitated the student.

Special camps

NSS volunteers from Government Higher Secondary School, Velliyanai, Karur district, benefited from the special camp organized recently at Manavadi.

The activities included cleaning up school premises, clearing jungle growth in community centre arena, sapling planting, creating awareness of dangers of using tobacco, rainwater harvesting, organ donation and blood donation, diabetes and maintaining dental hygiene.

Students benefitted from the legal awareness programme conducted as part of the camp.

They also participated in an animal husbandry workshop that threw light on cattle and disease management. Former MLA V. Ramanathan inaugurated the camp in the presence of the Chief Education Officer M. Vasu. Headmaster of Government HSS, Velliyanai, V. Ponnusamy, presided over the inaugural. NSS Project Officer S. Uma explained the activities at the camp.

Training in karate

The NSS unit of the Government Higher Secondary School, Tiruvarankulam in Pudukottai district, organised a special week long camp recently.

Volunteers took part in sapling planting campaign, environment awareness campaigns, awareness rallies etc during the camp. The NSS volunteers were imparted special training in karate.

Humour club

The Humour Club of S. M. Hindu Matriculation School, Sirkazhi, was inaugurated at a function held at the school premises recently. N. Periyasamy of Jawahar Novodya Vidhayalaya, Karaikal, was the chief guest. K. Saradha, principal, presided over the inaugural. S. M. Sivaranchari, Asifa Nzareen also spoke.

Students Anandhan, Agalya, Pradeep and Priyanka presented jokes.
