Corporation will provide lighting, furniture, toilets and drinking water facilities to schools

SALEM: Students in seven Salem Corporation higher secondary schools will soon be able to access latest books on various subjects and Internet. The civic body has planned to equip the libraries with latest books and modern facilities.

Textbooks, books on various subjects published recently, reference materials, books for those preparing to appear for competitive examinations, guides and computers with Internet connection will be provided to the following Corporation schools: Girls Schools Manakkadu, Ammapet Nanjampatti, Pavadi and Gugai; Boys Schools Fort, Ammapet and Pavadi.

At present, books and other learning materials available in the libraries of many Corporation schools are inadequate. The libraries do not have latest reference materials and related subject books, civic officials pointed out.

More than 8,000 students studying in the seven schools will benefit from the Corporations Plan. A majority of the students are coming from poor families. We will make sure that they get quality education and all facilities to improve their knowledge, officials said.

We have asked the school authorities to provide a list of books they require for the libraries. We will consult with the experts before upgrading the libraries, Corporation Commissioner M. Jayaraman said.

The Corporation will also provide lighting, furniture, adequate number toilets and drinking water facilities to the schools.

The civic body set aside a sum of Rs. 2 crore as education fund this year. Earlier, the funds allotted for education were not utilised fully. But this year, the civic body will equip its schools with all necessary facilities, ensuring better study environment for the students, civic officials said.

The libraries in all the Corporation schools would be equipped adequately in a phased manner, officials added.
