SALEM: In a bid to create awareness among the public and spread the message of ‘Save the Girl Child’, the National Cadet Corps (NCC) volunteers took out a rally in the city on Thursday.
Flagged off at the Government Arts College on Cherry Road by Mayor J. Rekha Priyadarshini, the rally passed through important thoroughfares, including Gandhi Road, Ramakrishna Road and Omalur Main Road before culminating at the Little Flower Higher Secondary School.
Over 1,000 cadets from various schools and college participated in the rally and raised slogans urging the people to give education to the girl children. They also highlighted the negative effects of foeticides and female infanticide.
Earlier, addressing the cadets at the college, the Mayor called upon them to spread the message among the people in the rural areas. Students should go to the villages to educate the masses about the ill effects of inhuman practices such as foeticide, she stressed. The State Government is implementing a number of programmes for the welfare of the girl children.
Deputy Mayor C. Panneerselvam, Wing Commander KVM Asraf, Commanding Officer, 5 (TN) Air Squadron NCC and senior officials were present.
