To enable mass tree planting on June 5
VIRUDHUNAGAR: Ten lakh saplings would be moved to various distribution centres in the district from Saturday to enable mass tree planting planned on June 5.
Inaugurating an awareness campaign on the mass tree planting here on Monday, District Collector, Sigy Thomas Vaidhyan, said the 10 lakh saplings would be moved in trucks to the distribution centres. The saplings kept at the centres would be watered till June 5.
Three sticks and gunny bags would be given along with saplings to the people. The sticks and gunny bags would be used as tree guards, she said. Ten grams of azospirillum would also be given to the people to ensure better growth of the saplings.
A documentary, “maramum, mazhaiyum” (tree and rain), on the mass tree planting would be telecast through local cable television channels to create an awareness among the masses, she said.
Ms. Sigy planted saplings on Virudhunagar Branch premises of State Bank of India, as a mark of inaugurating the campaign. The Regional Manager of SBI, Deva Senapathi, handed over Rs. 5 lakh to the Collector for the mass tree planting movement. The Virudhunagar branch Chief Manager, K. Dayanidhi, was present.
