Win first place in all four categories

CHENNAI: Students of Sri Sankara Vidyashramam Matriculation Higher Secondary School (Tiruvanmiyur) bagged the first place in all four categories in the music competition conducted by Bharat Vikas Parishad (Mylapore branch) here on Saturday.

There were four categories - Tamil, Hindi, Sanskrit and folk songs. Several city schools participated in the zonal-level round of the national group singing competition.

The team from Sankara had been rehearsing for the past two weeks.

Interestingly, a member of their team danced while her teammates sang.

This improvisation seemed to have worked for them. Chief guest Narayana Viswanath, vice president, Narada Gana Sabha, said such competitions helped students gain confidence and build their personalities. "Concentration plays a vital role in one's success," he added.

N. Murali, managing director, The Hindu, complimented the office bearers of the socio-cultural, non-political organisation for their service to the underprivileged and differently-abled over the years.

Music director Shankar Ganesh said it was heartening to see several young and talented students coming up.

"The future of our country lies in the hands of students," he said. Organisers distributed wheelchairs, crutches and artificial limbs to differently-abled persons.
