TIRUNELVELI: The Corporation Bank distributed general credit cards to the farmers selling their produce at Maharaja Nagar Uzhavar Sandhai (farmers’ market) here on Wednesday under its Corp-Grameen Vikas programme, which was introduced in 2006 for bringing the hitherto unreached rural population under the banking services.

As the ‘Branchless Banking’ system, being advocated by the Reserve Bank of India, has become popular in the areas where the people assemble in large numbers everyday, the Corporation Bank has come forward to extend that facility in the farmers’ markets at Maharaja Nagar and Melapalayam and give the General Credit Cards to the farmers selling vegetables in these markets.

In the ‘Community Pongal’ celebrations held at Maharaja Nagar farmers’ market here on Wednesday, Speaker R. Avudaiyappan and Minister for Environment, Youth Welfare and Sports T.P.M. Maideen Khan handed over the General Credit Cards to the farmers.
