A sandalwood tree on the premises of the Government Hospital at Sathyamangalam was reportedly felled and taken away by unidentified miscreants during night time.

The stump and a few branches was all that remained of the tree on Sunday morning.

However, Sathyamangalam police said they have not received any complaint so far.

According to official sources, the Forest department has to be informed and paid royalty if a sandalwood tree grown on a patta land is felled.

District Forest Officer K. Rajkumar said the trunk of what looked like a partially grown tree that was taken away does not carry any value since there was no heartwood.
