Sand lorry owners demand permission for mechanised mining

Sand lorry owners staged a protest here on Sunday demanding permission for mechanised mining.

The owners said the Government's rule banning mechanised mining and permitting only manual mining affected their business because of labour shortage. Pressing for the demand and seeking an end to the domination by a few individuals, permission to mine sand from all river beds and a few others the owners recently struck work by refusing to ply the lorries.

Reiterating the demand, sand lorry and crusher lorry owners sat on a hunger fast at Gandhipuram.

Head of builders' association Vishnu Vardhan inaugurated the fast. Lorry owners' association head Manicka Raj and other office bearers Palanisamy, Yuvaraj, Selvarajamani and others participated.
