TIRUCHI: Anticipating an increase by at least 5,000 hectares during the forthcoming ‘samba’ season in the district, the Agriculture Department officials have stepped up the supply of seeds of ‘samba’ varieties.

Against the normal 53,000 hectares, the acreage is expected to be around 58,000 hectares in the district.

With the release of water from the Mettur dam, the Agriculture Department officials have stocked 575 tonnes of ‘samba’ seeds for ensuring timely distribution to farmers.

The varieties included Co-43, ASD-19, ADT-39 and BPT-5204, said the Joint Director of Agriculture (in-charge), Tiruchi, M. Kuppusamy.

The seeds would be supplied at a subsidised rate under the ‘Integrated Cereal Development Programme,’ he said.

On the coverage of ‘kuruvai,’ Mr. Kuppusamy. said that only 4,000 hectares out of the normal 8,500 hectares had been brought under the crop this season.
