SALEM: The city and its suburbs experienced a brief spell of welcome showers for 30 minutes on Saturday evening bringing respite to the sweltering heat.The steady showers, from moderate in many pockets to intense in few other places, inundated streets and roads.
The district had been experiencing intense heat for the past ten days with the mercury even crossing 40 degree Celsius on a fewer occasions.
Frequent power failures due to load shedding added the woes to the citizens.
Rain was also reported in many parts of the district with the hill station Yercaud receiving good rain accompanied by thunder and strong winds. The tourists who thronged the place thoroughly enjoyed the cool climate.
The sky also remained overcast with occasional bouts of drizzle throughout the evening.
