VELLORE: About 1,000 farmers from Vellore district will be participating in a “march to the Assembly” planned by the Tamil Nadu Toddy Movement (TTM) in Chennai on Friday. It is aimed at drawing the attention of the State government to the need to lift the ban on toddy.

A decision was taken at a consultative meeting of the TTM held under the presidentship of C.K. Dhanapal, president, Tamil Nadu Farmers Association, Vellore district, here on Wednesday.

The meeting demanded closure of all IMFL shops in the State from June 23 to 27when the World Classical Tamil Conference is scheduled to be held in Coimbatore and to serve toddy to the delegates. The resolution pointed out that toddy was not alcohol but part of food.

Through another resolution, the TTM urged the government to pay a percentage of the revenue earned from the sale of IMFL made from molasses, a by-product of the sugar mills, to sugar cane farmers who supplied cane to the mills, and abolish the free electricity given to farmers.
