"Fix minimum support price for sugarcane"

Nagapattinam: The composite Thanjavur District Farmers' Association comprising the present Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts has urged the Government to offer remunerative prices for sugarcane and fix it at Rs.1,000 per tonne with the recovery rate of 8.5 per cent.

Reacting to the minimum support price fixed by the Centre for sugarcane at Rs. 80.25 per quintal (Rs. 802.50 per tonne) with a recovery rate of nine per cent, K.G. Krishnamoorthy, a farmer of Mayiladuthurai and vice-president of the association, on Monday said that the price fixed by the Centre was not remunerative to the cane growers.

The cost of cultivation had gone up and the per acre yield in the Cauvery delta was very low compared to the other regions in the State. Besides the steep increase in wages of the workers engaged, the cane growers had to pay `extra' charges of Rs. 250 to Rs. 300 per lorry at the sugar mills for quick unloading of the cane. Mr. Krishnamoorthy appealed to Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to help the sugarcane growers
