The former Union Minister and Rajya Sabha member Mani Shankar Aiyar has urged the Railway Minister Mallikarjun Kharge to take steps for continuing the operation of the Rockfort Express from Kumbakonam.
The Railways has decided to short-terminate the Chennai–Kumbakonam Rockfort Express at Tiruchi with effect from August 29.
This decision follows the announcement in the railway budget of a new overnight express from Thanjavur to Chennai, the date of introduction of which is yet to be notified so far. Mr. Aiyar in his communication to Mr. Kharge pointed out that it was one of his most significant accomplishments to extend the Tiruchi – Chennai Rockfort Express to Kumbakonam and now short-terminating the train at Tiruchi had deeply distressed him. The Thanjavur District Rail Users’ Association had expressed disappointment at the notification of the termination of the train at Tiruchi without announcing the date of the introduction of the new train from Thanjavur to Chennai.
Mr. Aiyar urged the Railway Minister to consider preventing the decision of curtailing Rockfort Express at Tiruchi from being implemented on August 29.
