Funds to the tune of Rs.5.27 crore have been allocated for seven works in the district, according to N. Chinnadurai, chairman of the district panchayat.
Presiding over the District Planning Committee meeting held here on Tuesday, he said to develop backward areas with new projects under the State Equitable Growth Scheme, Kayatar, Kovilpatti, Pudur, Vilathikulam, Ottapidaram, Udangudi and Sathankulam panchayat unions had been identified.
To improve the living standards of the people in these areas, the new projects would aim at poverty alleviation, employment generation, educational development, sanitation improvements and drought mitigation, he noted.
To set up a farm pond and a tarpaulin cover in Vilathikulam, Rs.1.75 crore was set aside.
The other works included 10 green houses in Pudur at a cost of Rs.1.14 crore and launch facilities for safety matches industry in Kovilpatti on an outlay of Rs.45 lakh.
A sum of Rs. 69.25 lakh was earmarked to control anaemia and provide nutritious meal for children and to organise awareness programmes in Sathankulam and Udangudi, he said.
A home for abandoned and elderly women would be established in Kovilpatti at a cost of Rs.85.90 lakh.
Road infrastructure development works would be taken up in Pudur at a cost Rs.1.60 crore.
Mr.Chinnadurai appealed to the officials to complete the works expeditiously.
