Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Friday ordered the release of Rs.47.49 crore for the modernisation of police, including construction of new buildings for police stations and residential flats for police personnel, purchase of vehicles, modern equipment, communication facilities and forensic equipment.

A release stated that Rs.15.51 crore would be spent on the construction of police stations, Rs.5.06 crore on houses, Rs.9.38 crore on purchase of vehicles, Rs.23 lakh on communication facilities, Rs.14.60 crore on acquiring modern equipment and Rs.1.51 crore for Forensic department, Home Guards and Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption.

The government said even in 1991, Ms. Jayalalithaa initiated the modernisation process by providing modern equipment and AK 47 rifles to police and trained them in handling modern weapons. Besides, all police stations were connected through digital microwave network.
