The Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi, has awarded a research grant of Rs.30 lakh to K.Ramamurthy and R.Ramesh Babu, Professors in Bharathidasan University, to study properties of potassium niobate single crystals for laser applications. According to a university press release, potassium niobate single crystals are attractive for their outstanding ferroelectric, electro-optical, nonlinear optical and photorefractive solid state properties. Potassium niobate is regarded as one of the most promising materials for optical applications.
