CHENNAI: An amount of Rs.250 crore has so far been disbursed towards payment of unemployment allowance, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi said on Monday.

Till December 2009, 3.5 lakh people were covered. Those who had remained jobless after registering with employment exchanges for five years were being given the allowance.

The scheme of unemployment allowance was being implemented since 2006.

Reacting to the proposed agitation announced by All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa on the State government’s failure to control mosquitoes in Chennai, Mr. Karunanidhi said she was making such an announcement just to underscore her presence. However, the Chennai Corporation and State Public Health Department should pay greater attention to the mosquito problem.
