To 1,473 girls in Tuticorin last year
Tuticorin: The Collector, R. Palaniyandi, said that the administration had disbursed Rs.2.2 crore as marriage assistance to 1,473 girls under Moovalur Ramamritham Ammaiyar Ninaivu Marriage Assistance Scheme during the last financial year (2007-08).
Speaking to reporters here on Monday, he said that the welfare was distributed to girls who had studied up to Std X with an aim to help financially poor parents to get their daughter’s married as well as to promote the educational status of girls from economically backward class of the society.
He said that priority would be given to the 928 applications (all found valid after scrutiny) which were pending from the last fiscal, during the disbursal of assistance under the scheme this financial year.
Under the Anjukam Ammaiyar Ninaivu Inter-caste Marriage Assistance Scheme, assistance to the tune of Rs.11.5 lakh was extended to a total of 59 beneficiaries in the district who had opted for inter-caste marriages, during the same period.
Likewise, Rs.8.5 lakh was given away to 71 daughters of economically poor widows last fiscal under the E.V.R. Maniammaiyar Ninaivu Poor Widows’ Daughters’ Marriage Assistance Scheme.
Under a scheme of social welfare department, 100 sewing machines were distributed to as many number of poor women between April 1,2007, and March 31, 2008, to increase their self employment potential.
Later, he gave away marriage assistance to 20 girls under Moovalur Ramamritham Ammaiyar Ninaivu Marriage Assistance Scheme and a sewing machine, costing Rs 2,300, to a destitute woman.
