To purchase kerosene barrels, says Union Minister
PUDUKOTTAI: The State Government has sanctioned a sum of Rs.1.90 crores as subsidy to 631 fair price shops run by the Cooperatives Department in the district, which were functioning at a loss.
The Government has also provided Rs.1.17 lakh as subsidy to 52 more fair price shops for the purchase of kerosene barrels, besides financial assistance of Rs.3.40 lakh to 68 shops for the purchase of modern weighing machines, the Union Minister of State for Home, S. Regupathy, said while speaking at the 53 rd All India Cooperative Week Celebrations here on Saturday.
The State Government had fixed a target of Rs. 31 crore for the distribution of short-term farm loans to farmers in the district during the current year, of which Rs.13.08 crore had already been disbursed.
Jewel loans to the tune of Rs.51.73 crore had been so far disbursed by the District Central Cooperative Bank, Rs.26.33 crore by the Primary Agricultural Cooperative Banks and Rs.12.36 crore by the town cooperative banks.
Mr. Regupathy said the loan waiver announced by the Government had benefited 85,663 farmers in the district and loans to the tune of Rs.179.16 crore taken by them had been written off.
The Collector, S.J. Chiru, said the members of the self-help groups were prompt in the repayment of the loan dues and called upon the farmer beneficiaries to follow suit. The Rs. two per kg rice scheme had benefited a total of 3.82 lakh ration cardholders in the district, he said.
The MLAs Udayam Shanmugam and Ramasubburam, Chairman of the District Panchayat C. Muthusamy, the Chairperson of the Pudukottai Municipality, Ramathilagam Udaiyappan, Regional Joint Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Rama Jayampandian and others spoke.
Mr. Regupathy distributed loans to the members of the women SHGs and also special awards to the various cooperative societies for their achievements.
