The district panchayat council will spend Rs.1.41 crore from its fund for creating civic amenities in rural areas and top priority would be given for augmenting drinking water facilities, it was decided at a meeting here on Friday.

Grant

The district panchayat received a State Finance Commission grant of Rs.1.45 crore for August, September and October. A sum of Rs.5 lakh was earmarked for administrative expenses and the rest would be spent for undertaking development works in district panchayat wards, said district panchayat vice-chairman S. Rajmohan who presided over the meeting.

Equal importance would be given for road connectivity, construction of overhead tanks, sinking of borewells and desilting of water bodies.

Since the district panchayat had the right to sanction drinking water projects independently, there was no need to get approval from the district administration.

At the same time, the council had to obtain approval from the Collector for implementation of other projects, he said. The council cancelled a proposal for construction of an auditorium at Pappanaickenpatti in Vedasandur block at a cost of Rs.2 lakh as the village had no suitable place for it.
