For blacktopping of roads in all 60 wards, among other works

TIRUCHI: Tiruchi Corporation will soon get an assistance of Rs.130 crore from the government for blacktopping of roads, construction of drains and toilets in all the 60 wards in the city, Transport Minister K.N. Nehru has said.

The Corporation has approached the government seeking the assistance for improving the amenities and it is likely to be first in the State to get the funds, Mr. Nehru said speaking after distributing retirement benefits and certificates for meritorious service to Corporation employees here on Thursday.

Mr. Nehru said that nearly Rs.1,000 crore worth works have already been sanctioned by the government for the city and these included major schemes such as the flood prevention and the drinking water supply augmentation scheme. He appealed to the Corporation officials and employees to extend their full cooperation in executing the development schemes.

Elected representatives of the Corporation should also work in coordination with the officials. Earlier, he distributed retirement benefits to the tune of Rs.57.98 lakh to 22 employees of the Corporation who retired recently, certificates and medals to 32 drivers who had an accident free record for 10 to 25 years and assistance to the family of an employee who had died in harness. Mayor Sarubala R. Tondaiman, Deputy Mayor M. Anbazhagan, Commissioner T.T. Balsamy and others attended the function.
