World Bank sanctions the money World Bank has sanctioned the money, says the Health Minister

THANJAVUR: The World Bank has allotted Rs. 609 crore for improving government hospitals in Tamil Nadu, Health Minister K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran said on Tuesday.

Of this, Rs. 240 crore will be used for construction of buildings, and the rest for buying equipment.

Tenders for the works to be taken up in the first phase have been called, he told presspersons after inspecting the Rajah Mirasudhar Government Hospital and the Thanjavur Medical College Hospital, along with Union Minister of State for Finance S.S. Palani Manickam, and Minister for Commercial Taxes S.N.M. Ubayathullah.

He said the Rajah Mirasudhar Government Hospital, which houses the Maternity and Paediatrics Departments, would be upgraded.

He said construction of various buildings was going on in the Thanjavur Medical College. The Minister said Deans for five medical colleges would be posted in 15-20 days. Orders were issued for appointing 1,800 nurses and 1,350 doctors.
